The university stage 2 assessment involves interviews with a selection of students and staff to assess their knowledge and skills.
After Stage 1 has been passed and the department is satisfied that a cohort of students has completed all the infant feeding elements of the programme they can apply for these students’ knowledge and skills to be assessed. At least three months’ notice is needed for the Baby Friendly office to arrange a Stage 2 assessment.
This assessment consists of a visit conducted remotely by one or two Baby Friendly assessors. The Baby Friendly project lead, Lead Midwife for Education (LME)/Head of Department (HOD) and core members of the teaching team that deliver the majority of the Baby Friendly content will be invited to individual, professional discussions about the standards, themes and learning outcomes and how they are delivered within the curriculum. In addition, discussions will take place around what support is available for the Baby Friendly project lead to implement the standards and plans for sustainability and maintaining the standards following accreditation.
The student interview (about 30 minutes) is based on the university student audit tool and clinical assessment tool for healthcare staff and will be used to assess the student’s knowledge and skills relating to the 5 themes and learning outcomes. These include understanding breastfeeding, supporting infant feeding, close and loving relationships, managing challenges and promoting positive communication.
Following successful completion of Stage 2 assessment, the course will be accredited as Baby Friendly.
As part of the Stage 2 assessment you will be asked to send details of the students and you can use the student lists template to prepare this information, and then populate the timetable for student interviews once your lead assessor has confirmed those selected
