Good news

Thank you for being there for children everywhere.

Despite the challenges the past year has brought, your support has helped to keep children around the world learning, healthy and safe.

Below you can read about some of the lives you’ve helped to shape.

Tackling coronavirus with a chatbot

U-Report is a global messaging service that allows young people to comment on local and national issues. It gathers opinions and information from young people about issues that affect them, from health to youth unemployment to climate change, and uses the data to show those making the decisions what they need to change.

With millions of young people already using the U-Report tool worldwide, it came to play an important role in spreading accurate health information during the early stages of the pandemic. UNICEF offices came together to set up a coronavirus chatbot, with pre-programmed answers from experts for any questions young people may have around handwashing, social distancing and protecting themselves from Covid-19.

The Covid-19 bot has now been accessed by over 6 million people in 52 countries, helping to stop misinformation and keeping children and young people safe around the world.

Keeping the world’s children learning through coronavirus

The numbers are unprecedented, the implications enormous. As the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the globe, school closures impacted more than 91 per cent of students worldwide.

Never before have so many children been out of school at the same time, disrupting learning and upending lives, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised. UNICEF has been working with partners to keep schools safe and students learning, in classrooms or at home, online and offline – wherever they are.

More than 3 million students were out of school in Rwanda when the government recommended schools close to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. To keep children learning, the country turned to one of its most accessible mediums: radio.

UNICEF identified more than 100 radio scripts from around the world focusing on basic literacy and numeracy that could be adapted to align with Rwanda’s school curriculum. By working with partners, including the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, to produce and air the classes, children around the country were able to continue their education safely from home.

Your support helps to make initiatives like these possible – thank you!

Supplying the fight against Covid-19

The largest vaccine procurement and supply operation ever is underway – and UNICEF is leading it on behalf of the Global COVAX Facility.

We are working to ensure that all countries participating in the Facility (currently 190) have equitable access to 2 billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine by the end of 2021.

From buying and transporting supplies through to administering the vaccine, your support is helping us to deliver history. We’re working to ensure:

  • vaccines get to even the most remote places in the world
  • vaccines are safely stored using cold chain equipment
  • health workers are protected and trained to vaccinate their communities

Thank you for being there for every child, everywhere.
