Statement from the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) in response to the tragic loss of life due to boat capsizing in the Channel.

Responding to the tragic news of loss of life due to a boat capsizing in the Channel today, Joanna Rea, Director of Advocacy at the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK), said: 

“We are deeply saddened to learn that at least one child is among those who have died as a result of a boat capsizing in The Channel today. Our thoughts and condolences go to the families whose lives have been devastated by this tragedy.

“Heartbreakingly, we have been here before. Despite enormous risks, children, parents and families will continue to do whatever it takes to escape violence, conflict and persecution in the desperate hope of a safe future – and tragically some will pay the ultimate price.

“Every child has the right to grow up safely with their family. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that lives are at stake, and we urge the UK Government to urgently find a solution which protects children from danger and ensures safe and legal routes to enter the UK, while remaining committed to long-term refugee resettlement plans.”
