Supporting Ayman’s first visit to a doctor

Meet Ayman, 9 months: Ayman and his dad have come to UNICEF’s health clinic in Rukhban, Jordan. It’s the first time baby Ayman has ever seen a doctor.

“Today we come here because Ayman, he has a cough and his skin, there is a problem, I don’t know what… This is the first time we have seen a doctor in over a year,” says Ayman’s father.

The clinic provides health care for Syrian refugees living in the harsh environment of the “Berm”, a no-man’s land located between Jordan’s North-East border with Syria. The area has received no humanitarian support for months since the Jordanian Military stopped operations after a suicide attack.

UNICEF has opened the only healthcare service in this area as a first step to help these families.

Ayman is found to be border-line malnourished and the medical team suspect the rash on his skin is scabies.

To prevent further deterioration, the medical team provide Ayman’s father with some sachets of PlumpyNut, a peanut butter-like paste providing calories and essential nutrients designed to combat malnutrition. They prescribe antibiotics for the respiratory problems plus a cream to help with the scabies.

Meet Pat: Why I’m leaving a gift in my Will to UNICEF

Pat saw UNICEF’s work in action and after her own investigations to make sure her donation would be spent wisely, decided to leave a gift in her Will.

Pat was inspired to leave a gift in her Will to UNICEF after reading our Annual Report in the 1980’s.  She and her husband investigated UNICEF for themselves and saw some vaccination and primary health programmes in action.

She says, “UNICEF has always been sensible and accountable.”

“UNICEF has this network in place, doing good work all the time, not just when there’s an emergency,” says Pat UNICEF Legacy supporter.
