Bodoor

Meet Bodoor, 17

A Syrian girl determined to walk on the moon

My dream is to be an astronomer, and an astronaut too

17-year-old Bodoor lives in a refugee camp in Jordan and has a big dream – to walk on the moon. In 2014, she was forced to leave Syria with her family and travel the long, difficult journey to the Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan. She was shocked when she arrived.

At first they had to live in a house with no electricity and no floor, just rocks and sand on the ground. However, she found peace when looking at the night sky.

“I was looking at the sky and it was really dark, and for the first time I could see the stars… I was curious, I wanted to know more about it.”

Since then, Bodoor’s passion for space has caught the attention of people around the world, including former Nasa astronaut Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger. Watch the video for an inspiring message from one American astronaut to a Syrian refugee.

How is UNICEF helping children like Bodoor?

UNICEF believes every child has the right to education. We have supported the healthy growth and development of 22,000 children in Azraq Refugee Camp since it opened in 2014.

Bodoor attends a UNICEF-supported school and after-school remedial education programme and is working hard, “I’ve read all the books in the library about space and stars – I’m waiting for more.”

If she gets the chance, Bodoor wants to go to university to study astronomy. “If I don’t get the help or support I need, I’m going to remain in the camp just dreaming.”
