Rights Around the World
A global citizenship resource for schools
Rights Around the World is a resource for Rights Respecting Schools which focuses on global citizenship and UNICEF’s work to protect children’s rights around the world.
Schools can use the resource in assemblies, classrooms and with RRSA Steering Groups
Rights Around the World enables pupils to explore how children around the world, including here in the UK, are accessing their rights. Learners will explore examples of UNICEF’s global work, and consider how these link to children’s rights and Sustainable Development Goals. Resources will also provide learners with activities to support them to take action and respond creatively to global issues.
About the Resource
Each month, Rights Respecting Schools receive a pack exploring a rights issue in a country across the world. This contains a PowerPoint that can be used in assemblies, along with follow up activities that can be used in classrooms, during tutor time in secondaries, or by the Rights Respecting Steering Group. Schools are encouraged to create a display using materials provided to track the countries that they have explored each month and can also create passports for individual children or classes to record their learning.
The resources contain a range of information and activities that can be adapted by settings to ensure that it is suitable for their children. This resource is especially useful to support schools to work towards Outcomes 1 and 9 of the Rights Respecting Schools Award framework.

How to use this Resource
Within the PowerPoint, there are slides that can be used in assemblies, tutor sessions or within circle time. These include a travellers guide to introduce the country, a case study, and links to CRC articles and global goals. You can then use the Build Your Understanding activities to learn more about the case study as a follow up to the assembly. There will be ideas for practical hands-on activities that can also be used in classrooms, with RRSA pupil groups or in tutor time. Use the Take Your Learning Out into the World ideas to get creative and take action on the issue.

Use the map provided or an existing map to create a Rights Around the World display. Add to this display each month to track the countries that have been visited.
How to use this resource
These materials can be used to create individual passports for children or to create a class floor book to record learning.

Our School Council has been using the RATW resource, and it's been wonderful. They reflected on how sign language is used around school and it's prompted us to be more visible... It's not too text heavy. It's succinct and really accessible.
