Education

All children and young people have a right to education, one that develops their personality, talents and abilities to the full. This right was enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child thirty years ago.

However, around the world millions of children remain out of school or in school but not learning. But this challenge isn’t just abroad – here in the UK, there is still work to be done to ensure every child is able to fully realise their right to education. Our work focusses on realising the right to education for all children, with a particular focus on children on the move. We also advocate for transformative learning, gender equity, youth and digital skills, among other key areas. We believe education is the key to realising the present and future all children deserve.

Education for refugee and asylum seeking children

In 2017, the UK Committee for UNICEF commissioned research to understand how far refugee and asylum-seeking children are currently accessing their right to education in the UK. For children on the move who come to the UK, education is one of the first and most critical services they need access to.

This report, produced by Refugee Support Network, provides an up-to-date overview of the scale and impact of the difficulties facing child refugees and asylum-seekers in the UK. It highlights the barriers they face in accessing, remaining and thriving in education, and proposes recommendations for national and local decision-makers and service-providers.

UNICEF Education Strategy 2019-2030

Learning is a fundamental right for all children. Still, millions of children and young people around the world are out of school or in school but not learning. UNICEF’s new education strategy lays out the organisation’s approach to the challenge of ensuring every child learns.
