UNICEF statement on the earthquake in Panama
UNICEF stands in solidarity with the children, adolescents and families affected by the earthquake that struck Panama’s Pacific coast on October 9, 2026.
PANAMA CITY, October 9, 2026 – UNICEF stands in solidarity with the children, adolescents and families affected by the earthquake that struck Panama’s Pacific coast on October 9, 2026.
A powerful earthquake struck the southern Pacific coast of Panama at 12:56 p.m. local time. It was felt across much of the country, including Panama City and neighboring Costa Rica.
National authorities are assessing the impact, and it is still too early to determine the extent of the damage and the consequences for children and families.
UNICEF’s primary concern is for children and families near the epicenter. Earthquakes place children at risk of injury and family separation, and can leave them without shelter, safe drinking water, health care or access to education.
UNICEF stands ready to support the Government of Panama’s response if needed. We urge families living in Panama and neighboring countries to follow the instructions of local authorities.
