London, 3 March 2025 – The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) welcomes the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on the UK, published today.
Following a review of extensive evidence and dialogue with UK delegates, the Committee’s key concerns included the impact of rising poverty rates on children across the UK.
It recommended removing the two-child limit and the benefit cap and took the additional step of requesting an update on meeting this recommendation within 24 months, ahead of its standard reporting timeline – a process reserved for urgent issues.
The Committee also recommended the restoration of spending on Official Development Assistance to 0.7% of Gross National Income. This follows last week’s announcement of further cuts to the UK’s aid budget and underscores the critical role of development spending in protecting the world’s most vulnerable children.
We urge the UK Government to act on the Committee’s recommendations without delay, ensuring that the economic, social, and cultural rights of children everywhere are prioritised and protected.
